also sulphur dioxide if iron sulphide (pyrites) ore is used, the sulphur is baked off before the ore is put into the blast furnace.

Initially, carbon in the form of coke, reacts with oxygen to produce carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the reducing agent used to remove bonded oxygen from the iron oxide. The carbon monoxide is then oxidised to carbon dioxide
