I don't know any element with a melting point of 708 degrees. What scale is that?

i havnt got the foggiest!!!! i thought it was mayb graphite.

Hang on , Eddies1, your last sentence is a contradiction in terms. Graphite is one of the purest forms of carbon found in nature and is therefore definitely an element.
Sorry, Carbon if you insist!

Eddies1, graphite is carbon, as is diamond. Soot is carbon with some oils in it. 'A form of carbon' means carbon - an element. Just to pursue this rather crazy discussion, what 'form of carbon' would you accept as an element? Does it have a name other than, say, 'carbon'?
Eddies1 is right. All elements appear in the periodic table. Carbon is an element; diamond, soot and graphite are not elements
The correct term I think is that diamond and graphite are allotropes of carbon. Anyway the melting points of graphite and carbon are in the thousands (certainly well over 708 degrees).
And of course carbon doesn't form 2+ ions
factor 30, - gosh, there are two of you!
Carbon occurs naturally in three forms:
Graphite is the purest form of carbon found in nature. Clear diamond is also pure carbon.
Coal is mainly carbon but not pure.
All other forms of carbon (soot, lampblack, coke, charcoal, etc.) are not natural (and usually not pure) but are commonly the result of heat of some sort.

I am puzzled by that fact that because the different forms of carbon are given different names you deny that they are carbon. Very odd. Do you deny that ozone consists solely of the element oxygen?

(By the way, you can burn diamond. And what you get is pure carbon dioxide, nothing else.)

I know that carbon is not the answer to the original question. I was merely taking up EDDIE1's extraordinary claim that graphite isn't an element. Cheers.

This discussion is extrodinary. But im still no further on!! if it helps the questions its self says - Element Z has the following properties, then lists the above. The following questions say which group of the periodic table is it PROBABLY in, would the oxide of this element have a high or low melting point. when diluted in Hydrochloric acid it gives off a gas. what is the gas called. I am at a total loss, i have been thru several elements but none match. Pleassssssse some1 help.
Sorry, poopy, I am trying. I am working my way through that fascinating book "Nature's Building Blocks" by John Emsley, which devotes a chapter to each element in turn, in alphabetical order. I have reached Tantalum and so far the nearest I have come to that melting-point is Radium which melts at 700C. I'll carry on.
chakka - the question does state the units. Perhaps it is 708 Fahrenheit or Kelvin

It says which ELEMENT has a melting point of 708 degrees C! ive been thru them all and i cant suss it out. To the look of the naked eye there isnt an element with a melting point of 708 degrees C,
Oh, give over, EDDIES. Of course you won't find graphite in the Periodic Table because it already there, called Carbon. Graphite is pure Carbon, an element.
You won't find ozone there either because it is pure Oxygen, an element.

I'll push off now. If you still don't get it, read a good chemistry book or consult a qualified chemist - and I don't mean a pharmacist! 'Bye.

Yes, eltelione, that's what I'm afraid of. So that means I'll have to change 708C to Fahrenheit (1106F) and start again.

And then I've got 981 K. Oh, gawd....
No, no, what am I talking about? I have to covert 708F and 708K to centigrade, not the other way round. Sorry, it's my birthday today and my family have given me a rather splendid lunch, with the odd drop of alcohol. See you tomorrow.
