Cats' reaction to music

Pat miaows and bites my feet when I play a descant recorder, but will not leave the room. Scamper used to stand up and reach for my arm when I played a violin.

Why?

Scamper was a neutered tom, and so is Pat, I think.

Surely not a comment on my incompetance

I put the question in the Animals and nature categoy as well and got a couple of comments ("cats 12/04/06" in the search box will find it) but not a complete answer.
We had only had Pat 3 weeks when I posted the question, he has got used to it now.
