Birds resting or roosting fluff out their feathers which traps air, which is then warmed by the bird's body, and keeps its temperature regulated.
the penguin has special legs in that the warm blood travels down the inside of the muscles as opposed to the normal outside so that the blood doesn't cool too much before it gets to the feet
