Only thermite (used for controlled demolition of a building), melts steel. Not one high rise building in history has collapsed on its footprint just by fire because it doesnt burn hot enough to melt steel.

The steel in the twin towers DID NOT MELT !!!
What happened was that the temperature reduced the structural strength of the steel to the point where it could not support the load of the buildings. Steel melts at 1200 deg C , the temperature of the burning building reached more than 600 deg, at that temperature the strength of the steel frame was no longer sufficient to support the weight of the building, so it collapsed.
Read this, structural steel begins to lose it's strength at temperatures above 300 deg C , the fire in the twin towers was over 600 deg C !

By the way, Thermite is NOT used in the demolition of buildings!
Shaped explosive charges are used to cut the steel supports so that there is a controlled collapse of the structure.
Thermite was used to weld railway lines , it has not been used in demolition.
I was works metallurgist for an international company that made steel cranes. I do know a bit about the strength of steel.

Hey Lord Kelvin predicted in 1890 that the twin towers would fall as they did - hey no ballshot !
some building are so heavy that they have no alternative but to fall on their foot print - because the turning moment necessary to topply them sideways is too great
and yes at the time I am afraid
engineers were saying that the heat was great enough weaken the structure sufficiently for it to collapse
