Just been to collect my little grandson and his big sister from school. He has autism-the type they call "high functioning" so goes to a mainstream primary school. I rarely pick them up, usually the other granny does it, so people don't know me and I overheard some mums call him "the weird kid". The little mite is 5 years old for god's sake, and is one of the sweetest natured humans. Why be so cruel about a little child? I didn't say a word because my granddaughter hadn't heard them and I didn't want to draw attention for her sake (she's 8) but it's really upset me. I shan't tell his mum and dad so I've told you nice bunch instead so you can stick pins in voodoo dolls for me.

A few years back similar opinions would have been expressed about coloured children, that has changed and the same needs to happen in cases like this.
I wouldn't involve school over one silly person's comment.
As he grows and gets to understand himself and those around him, he'll develop coping strategies.
My eldest Grandson used to walk towards people who stared if for example he was doing helicopter hand movements as he walked.
'Is there something you'd like to ask me?'
