I Am A Hypocrite

I have just watched a tv programme and said very unkind things about a contestant (not a celebrity) regarding her appearance to my wife. We even had a chuckle about it.

I wouldn't dream of putting those comments on the internet for the contestant to see and was quite incensed to see many other people making similar comments to mine.

Why do people think it is acceptable to be so rude about strangers knowing that the person concerned will either see it or hear about it?

why are you a hypocrite? Just because you hold an opinion, you are not obliged to put it on a website; thinking something but not broadcasting it isn't hypocrisy.
Shouldn't think a contestant on a TV programme will ever be privy to your comments to your wife. It's human nature to notice and comment on things, including appearance. If I go to town, I spend the whole time mentally tutting to myself about the sights I see. It's when you say these things to the person or someone who could pass it on is when it becomes unpleasant. My father in law is quite posh and he says that a gentleman never intentionally insults someone (doesn't mean he doesn't have mean thoughts though).
^Aye it is.

It's just that I felt so disgusted that people posted horrid things about her whilst I'd been thinking the same.
But thank, jno :)

And thanks Sher and Wharton, too :)
(Sometimes I feel I should scrub my brain with bleach, I can be very scathing/judgmental internally - have just had to stop myself saying something nasty to my sister on FB (she had posted one of those 'thinking about you in heaven' things about my mother, such hogwash)).
It's not hypocritical. We all do it to some extent, but broadcasting it is hurtful. I think it would only be hypocritical if you criticised someone behind their back and then said the opposite to their face.
I think you should be able to say whatever you want at home to the people that know you.
