The smallest unit of length was the finger. How many inches was a finger?

It wasn't actually the whole finger... from one knuckle to the middle knuckle on a mans index finger was one inch.  A span... one hand width was four inches.  From the tip of the nose to the end of the index finger of the out stretched arm was one yard...

I think the first definition of the inch dated from sometime in the fouteenth centuary as the length of three grains of barley.

No wonder the metric system took hold!
