Walk past usually, though i did occasionally buy a tin of dog food for a tramp (who had a dog with him- obviously!) in Manchester City Centre some years ago who i used to see on my way to work.
usually walk past. they could/should be claiming benefits if they really have no income.

actually, I don't often see beggars.
Walk past.
always used to give them something, if they have no address they can't get any benefits and with no benefits they can't get an adress ie flat or bedsit.
address (spl)
There's too many professional beggars now.
If they play a musical instrument well and/or have a dog with them I will give, can't help myself really. I am always amazed how well kept and well behaved the dogs are in my local area.
I buy The Big Issue. At least those sellers are trying to earn an honest living.
Of course the homeless are entitled to benefits, they collect their giro in person.

If they ask for money to buy something to eat I offer to take them to the store and buy them a meal. If they insist they want the money I ignore them and continue on my way.
I rarely give them money, almost never.
hc4361 There was a tv documentary a few years back they make it very hard to claim.
I knew someone who was homeless and they only way he got benefit was to sign into the Sally Army Hostel. Once in the system, yes they may get a giro things change.
walk past, a lot of these beggars are offered accomodation once homeless but choose to live on the street.
I remember when my wife worked in London and passed a beggar & his dog every day. One day, she gave him a big bag of dog treats and got a real mouthful from the beggar!
cazzz1975, A neighbour split with his girlfriend had trouble paying the mortgage then ended up on short time at work. The house was repossessed he ended up on the street. Because he had not kept up with the payments on the house it is classed as making yourself homeless and could not get any help. He ended up sleeping in his van as the council did not want to know.
walk past, but give to charity.
So he did not apply to the council housing list then? Bizarre , most people who are repossessed apply for emergency housing via their council
Cazzz, a single man has the lowest priority for social housing.
Impending homelessness will improve his priority
cazzz if read my post again he is classed as making himself homeless so they don't help. As daffy says a single man is the last one to get any help.
I have been repossessed in the past, they do help you
