Just a Guess, but it could be Aspiration

Avarice is more to do with greed than someone having the presumption to "aspire". I think Redman may be right.
I'd have said dog in a manger before you said begins a. Roget will list all the synonyms of what's been suggested.
Like Antlad I thought covet. Could the a be wrong?What was the clue for that?

It's not a crossword.It's just something which came up in conversation.
I think the word is covetous from the verb to covet.
