One starts Dj I seem to remember
Hello Matakari,
TAMBOUR is indeed thematic, but not the answer required here, it needs to be 2 letters longer, then the next item starts as Sarrie indicates and is 6 letters long. After NAKER and before TAMBOUR--, is a name of a popular dance at parties! As in the Speccie 1900, you will get assistance from the 12 capital letters in the rubric.
The first item starts at 1.
As doch said Tambour needs another two letters.

You are then looking for two themed words the first of 6 letters starting at 38 and running up to a 5 letter word from 20 up.

As you have a lot of letters in place you should be able to fill in the 4 sets of 3 at the corners from ERROR IN MARCH.

Thanks to you all for the very clear hints! Sarrie, which spelling is preferred for 39up: DJI ( Is the "I" in your response a hint. too? )or DJE?
DocHH and kayakamina, I now have my conga and tambourin, and I also have some remaining letters from the rubic - ROMARH - which have to go somewhere in the two top corners, 1 & 9...Just need to get the letters for the corners 1 & 9 and I think I should be able to work out the rest...Thanks again!
The item in question begins DJE; there in an M is square 1 and an R in square 9.

Yes! I am seeing the light with "Bodhran" and am now puzzling out the word or words around the perimeter from 20 to 6 ( How many words here? )...Interesting,indeed! Thanks for all the assistance! It has been a good learning experience for me!
BODHRAN is good. 20 up finishes just before 1!! drb told you earlier square 1 was M. From 20 to 6 is 2 words 5, then 8! 1 is the start square, do you have Chambers?
Question Author
Thank you, DocHH! Chambers gives me "Mridamgam", so the other one must be "Tanka" though I don't understand this last one.
I think I went astray with 5 DOWN: G??R? ( I had a B instead of a G to begin with )= GLARE? and 11 ACROSS:
I?A?? = ITALY
Many thanks for confirming!
5d, distasteful=gory, latitude = l, so G(L)ORY.

from 20 up = TAIKO
