Many hanks for the link Joe and
Seasons greetings to all who labour here.
Even thanks:-)
thanks cluelessjoe - lets start playing
Thanks Joe and a good weekend to you too.
Many thanks, cluelessJoe. It's good to have the weekly challenge in time to look at it on the train home.

I don't know how this one's going to pan out. A lucky guess at the theme led me to the title before I'd filled any of the grid except 1d. Pity we have to send the whole thing in or I'd be done now. OK, open wine and pore over dictionary (less messy than it sounds on a good night).
b****y hell, ahearer. I've only looked at the preamble and am totally bemused !

I shall tackle this at work tomorrow on double time (isn't life a bitch?)
Hang in there bobbycollins. My first reaction was the same as yours, but having slowly made a start, the preamble gradually makes sense and everything becomes clear. All in all, a pleasant puzzle with a fun element.
many thanks for link
Sorry, bobbycollins, I wasn't trying to appear smug. I've still not filled in the rest of the grid. I was just noting that different elements of the puzzle can fall into place in a strange order -- at least, I hope I'll find that's true when/if I get to the end.
i agree starwalker a very fun puzzle, finding the names being the most enjoyable part i thought. Not having brewer's i have not worked out this part but it is not needed for completion.

thanks glow-worm i will enjoy the weekend with similar fun

xmas theme must be next week (if there is one this year)
Sorry, AHearer, I honestly didn't intend to imply smugness on your part - just amazement! - still haven't had chance to start it yet - b****y work keeps appearing in my intray - it's outrageous on a Saturday - must speak to the high-ups about these intrusions into my Listener time.

bobbycollins - Do what I do. I have a clipboard at work with all work related papers attached and beneath the top page that week's Listener conveniently photocopied on an A4 sheet. Looks great from a distance as you puzzle over the clues!
Thank goodness for concealed identities on this site!
Well done, Walterloo. It should come as no surprise to anybody that somebody who cheats at doing a crossword will also cheat his employer. With millions of people unemployed, being made redundant, and praying to be able to find a job to pay the bills, it's nice to know that people who spend their work time slacking are doing okay. Bravo.
Listenerite
This isn't the first time you have mentioned cheating. Just whom are we cheating if we ask for help in solving a crossword puzzle? Is it just this particular thread you post to, or do you similarly berate those who ask for help with specific clues for Mephisto, Daily Express and dozens of others every day on this site?
"With millions of people unemployed, being made redundant, and praying to be able to find a job to pay the bills, it's nice to know that people who spend their work time slacking are doing okay."

I think that is a terrible thing to say. People should be rewarded only for HARD WORK! Not for slacking and just signing on.

I imagine that you are a signer-on. I suggest you get youself a JOB!!
Please just ignore him, guys.

Both my and Walterloo's comments were entirely jocular and not deserving of his tirade. I for one am on a pretty average wage and paying tax through the nose at 40 per cent, so the odd hour or so solving crosswords at the government's expense doesn't fill me with shame.

Anyway, I've always loved clipboards - hold one to your chest and folk think that you are actually doing something worthwhile.
ps for AHearer

Like you, I spotted 1d pretty quickly, and it has helped in getting me going. But like you at the time of your posting, I am a long way from holing out.
Just logged on to see a typical comment from someone who can't see the funny side of things. Bobbycollins was spot on to say my own comment about hiding the crossword at work was jocular, I've never 'cheated' on my employer because I AM the employer, and I work a six day week, with no lunches and no paid overtime. And I resent the implication I 'cheat' at crosswords just because I have a profile on this wonderful site full of fun guys and gals nudging each other here and there towards the right path. This has all been said before and probably will be said again, and the last thing I want is to start one particular user off on another righteous rant. I could have, and probably should have, ignored his comments, as rightly stated here earlier but, and I'm probably a bit naive thinking this, but if he reads this then maybe, just maybe, he might give up and go away. My definition of cheating does not include logging on here and looking for guidance, which I rarely do. I log on here to see what you brilliant people are talking about, whether I've solved the puzzle or not. Cheating involves looking at the answers, which are not available.
So, lets continue talking about this brilliant puzzle (two fun ones in a row!) and all those who are stuck persevere with it, because it's fab.
Merry Christmas to all here. And yes, even to the person who has a user name that makes an anagram, applicable to his comments, of 'SENILE TRITE'.
I remember, once upon a time, happening on a juxtaposition of the words "season" and "goodwill" with, I think, a reference to a date in late December. Looking at this thread I now realise I was mistaken....

Come on Listenerite, there is more to love and life than the Annual Statistics. But tell you what, Listenerite, as a gesture of seasonal generosity, and unless next week's offering is an absolute blinder, I reckon I'm on course for an all-correct free dinner this year. Wild horses wouldn't drag me to the annual dinner so how about I post it to you and you could pretend to be me and join the ranks of the elite.... Now isn't that a nice offer
The only thing I can't understand is the reference to Brewer's. I've checked on Bartleby.com and even downloaded the text at http://www.archive.org/details/brewersdictiona r000544mbp but can't find either reference.
Is there a more up-to-date version of Brewer's around?
