Thought I'd start a new thread to check out one of two of my answers as I don't want to 'give anything away' to those still working on them. I have almost finished but need to check 4 I can't quite make sense of.
16) Lots of relaxing games. Is this 'loots'? I have loo?s
32 Actor has large plants. I have reest (from trees)
20d. Rope for hanging king. I am guessing 'thaler' possibly from 'lather' but can' really relate it to the clue
30a Is this 'ernest'? Was toying with 'trione' for the alloys but couldn't make it fit with the letters I have (?rn?s?)
If I am going to post it, it needs to be today so all help gratefully received.

Hi Physicsgirl...
6d Beginning to investivate=I
In California Tons=C(T)AL
together ICTAL "of stress"

11a A small American bird is VIROE..not European ..omit E
around (carrying) IN=VIRINO

27A TANS ..leader of team =T and ANS short for answer...entered as ANTS
You should enter !
Question Author
ICTAL Beginning to investigate gives the 'i'. (beginning letter) T abbreviation of 'tons' and CAL for California. Ictal comes from ictus which is to do with stresses in poetry.
Virino. Small American Bird is Vireo but no 'e' for Eurpopean. Then insert the 'in' (carrying in'). 27) beats = tans from first letter of team and ans for answer, turned round became 'ants'
Hope this helps.
Question Author
Snap. Took a long time to type in and didn't recheck for other postings.
But you did spell Vireo correctly, Christiana..unlike me..
Many thanks to you both. I could see the cryptic part of ICTUS but didn't understand the definition! (usually the other way round). I had guessed "ANTS" because of
T+ANS and also twigged the connection with "Beats" as soon as I'd posted. Feel a bit more confident. One last question - 6a - TOLAR or TALAR? I have TOLAR but cannot explain it either way.
Question Author
TALAR A for Australian LT for officer AR for the first letters of 'attack rear '. which gives in that order 'altar' for block
6a Australian A
Officer LT
Starts to attack rear AR (first letters)
ALTAR=block
Entered as TALAR
Hi Physicsgirl!

6A Talar. Clue gives altar. Australian = a: Officer is Lieutenant = lt and starts of ( i.e. first letters of ) attack and rear.

26A Last letter is e: Note is la in Tee = golf support.

I for one certainly would not laugh at anybody's crossword efforts.

Best wishes.
Hi to you, Novalis!
See! If I'd submitted I'd have got it wrong with TOLAR, even though I'd considered and dismissed ALTAR. Definitely can't submit now I've had so much help.
All but one letter isn't bad I suppose.
Still, chin up, there's always next week.
Thanks
P.S.
Looking at the "recent posts" box made me decide to look at the "Body and Soul" forum. Oh dear. Could not help posting under the "why are you all idiots?" thread. Cannot believe that people bother with it! I'd recommend a look, it's really thought provoking (this last said with large amount of irony)
Question Author
I reckon you did really well - my original post shows similar struggles though in a different section of the crossword - and as you say, there's always next week. And don't forget this isn't exactly the easiest crossword around.
As for 'body and soul' I looked at it just once and ran screaming in the opposite direction. I'm afraid the thoughts it provoked in me were not very noble ones.
Thanks, Christiana. Going to read a good book or something now. Have been trawling through records from the last 60 years to type up a history of the orchestra that I play in and I'm now brain-dead.
Just for the record, I think you must be getting quite good at ev too. You seem to be getting there more quickly. I'm the only tortoise left!
Goodnight
ICTAL (see Ictus):

Beginning to investigate = i
California = Cal
tons = t

27a: TANS (Beats) -----> ANTS

Leader of team = T
Answer = ans

VIRINO:

Small American bird = Vireo

European = E

VIREO -E+IN = VIRINO

Cruciverbalist
Apologies to all above - I hadn't seen the second page !

C
thanks anyway, Cruciverbali. Always nice to hear from you!
Hi Folk!
See what you mean about Body and Soul!!
Appeals are now coming thick and fast. Six today and it'll be like that for the next couple of weeks. Not enough though to keep me away from EV. It's the normal June/July marking period with a team to look after that does that.
Remember, Physicsgirl, it was the tortoise that won the race.
As my first quiz of the Autumn/Winter is 4 weeks on Saturday I'd better go and set a few questions for it.
Look forward to "seeing" you all next week.
Body and Soul is truly an insight into the modern world. Such lengthy discussions on very meaningful topics, mostly expressed in excellent english. Novalis, good luck with the appeals marking. I was pleased to get 15/17 grade As for one of my lower sixth groups this year! If you are setting a quiz, please let me know about it so that I can enter.
Goodnight all.
