Oh dear, 17,000 down the drain.
The best walk by a country mile is The Great Glen Way in Scotland.

There you will take in Inverness (Battle of Culloden), Loch Ness and the monster, Urquart Castle (steeped in history) and Ben Nevis (just off track at the end of the walk in Fort William)
The Coastal Path in Wales is amazing, or Hadrians wall, or along the A5 From London to Holyhead, lots of history, diverse scenery, and it is a great road built by Telford, and in parts still has a base of reeds where it goes over marshy land in North Wales.
No seriously crossroads, there is a lot of scenery to see and a lot of ramblers go to a place called Pendle Hill.
