Please ignore my question. Have just found the answer in Bradfords Crossword book under prisons. Easiest place possible and never thought to look. Spent a lot of time reading Scott on Google!!!!
massymore - used by Sir Walter Scott in The Antiquary, meaning a dungeon.

D???K?M?H?G?
I have spent ages on various sites on line but not even a hint at this stage!! Can you please put me out of my misery?
sarumite I believe 1d is croakumshire 1a clay cold
Many thanks pega, and sorry to hi-jack your posting jenniferd. I had no intention of asking at such an early date but took advantage of the opportunity.
As I was unable to unearth croakumshire I had tentatively put Dead Cold for 1a and Greenheart for 25a. I will now amend as necessary.
