With regard to the name of the large town, should the answer be "Hull" or is it "Kingston-upon-Hull". ( I've never noticed an alternative answer being acceptable in this competition)

I'll take the opinion of the majority!

Many thanks

Hi Gumboot

Have looked in one GB atlas and states just HULL (east riding Yorks) and in another HULL Humberside. It is probably another one of those name changes - but don't know if Kingston-upon-Hull is the correct one now!!

Sorry cannot be more positive.

Kingston
Kingston
Kingston upon Hull is the full and correct name of the town.

Just looked in an old road map for said town and it gives Kingston-u-Hull Humberside.

More recent book gives Hull.

proper name is City of Kingston-upon-Hull ..............

abbreviated to Hull

it is a city and a unitary authority

even the city council abbreviates to hull in its web address!!

Thanks to you all.

My 2006 Philip's Navigator road atlas says Kingston-upon-Hull too but you never hear it called this by the man in the street or on TV etc.

To make matters worse, the compiler referred to it as a large town and not a city. Maybe this is a hint that the answer should be Hull - or maybe not?
I cannot call to mind any other city, or large town, in the UK that is referred to by the name of the river on which it stands. (The Hull River joins the Humber at Hull)
Before anybody replies, I do not count the many ?????mouth around. Hullmouth sounds a bit crass.

I think that it would be churlish of the quiz checkers to exclude from the raffle any answers using either Hull, Kingston-upon-Hull and its variants. Particularly as the 'large town' is a city.

But, they have made mistakes before and refused to retract. As it says on the tin, they are the judges and they have the final and only judgement. It is their quiz after all.
