Many thanks for that Kayakamin and Quizmonkey. Where did you find the answer though? I have been searching for days without any luck. I am obviously looking in the wrong places.
Jim For what it's worth my problem with this puzzle was the alternative spelling of some words.

Jim I did not mean that Lancejack was not the correct spelling but some of the other clues i.e ****-a- Leekie.

I knew Lancejack's from my time in the army!

Cheers

Kayakmina I am finding this one very difficult - a lot harder that the last one. I have not had a lot of spare time to look at it the last couple of weeks either. :-)
I was censored- can you believe it?
Question Author
Yes I know what you mean I have never seen it spelt that way before. But I guessed it must be that way.

If like me you had morendo for the musical term then you would never have gopt lancejack. I was given it by a retired colonel that I asked and dismissed it as there was no M!

As a professional musician I can tell you that calando does not mean dying away and morendo is from the italian morire - to die! Ours is not to reason why, just to get on and try to complete the blinking thing. Hey ho. Good luck.

Macpark: Chambers gives calando as "gradually slowing with diminishing volume". I'd call that dying away, but what do I know?! :)

You are right Quizmonkey but it comes from the verb calare to decrease as opposed to morire to die.

Whilst the answer is technically not incorrect, given the clue, I would have chosen morendo every time.

Hey there Jimjools sorry to hear you're still struggling with that monster - I too had morendo and that made life a bit tricky to say the least. I had bags of help from Kazizere a week or so back & she sorted me out completely or I'd still be chasing my tail around & getting cranky - can we help anywhere else ?

cheers

Hi Seekeerz. Yes I will probably be back for more help. But I do like to try and do as much as I can on my own. I seem to be asking more on this one than last month.

Hi there, I have done all except for two which don't seem to 'marry up'....

37d 'the lichen lungwort' - seems to be OAK LUNG but that means that 49a St Mary Mead's amateur sleuth can't be Marple (which seems obvious).

Have looked on Google and Wikipedia but I can't find any other answers to these two clues! Help please!

Hi Cheaton It is Oak lump and Marple
Thanks so much K. I did search on Oak Lump but didn't get very far! That was a fun crossword though - difficult to find the alternative spellings of Townshend and Steuart-Powell.... I will look out for it in future.

Hi I'm back again. Are there alternative spellings for the answers to 34 & 36 accross? I make them 34 Griffiths and 36 Norbury but they don't fit. Where am I going wrong. Aaagh!
Question Author
I think I've got it but I don't understand it
Question Author

Ok! I'm down to my last 2 not sure I have any of it correct but.

21 down I have p?e?n?c and

45 accross I have l?g?n.

None of the answers seem to tie in with the clues very well, I have just gone with the letters I had and guessed.

HELP SOMEBODY!

Lygon fits in with the enigmatic theme of the crossword for 45 across but I don't have 21 down either.
