I do the Spectator xword every week -- and normallywithout problems, although it can sometimes take a while to track down the theme. I've completed all the normal clues (bar one).This week however I am wracking my brain and consulting Google and books galore but cannot get the link. I've tried with Green (?author/colour), Inuits/Eskimos/kayaks etc. There are three accents, so presumably some of the answers are French but I still haven't got the inspiration. I don't want the answers but if anybody could give me a hint it would be much appreciated.

What is the question?
Question Author
The link between the unclued answers from the xword entitled "Greenlanders ?"
Do you have any of the unclued answers - or at least the letters that you've got for them? What do the 'further instructions' (if any) say?
Question Author

I didn't give any letters because I would have liked to have worked it out for myself which is why I asked for a hint. As I said the xword is entitled "Greenland ?" ; the lights are ?O?T?AE?H?A? ; ?NN?S?AIL ; FOT?? ; FOU???EE? ; ?IRE ; ?IELDS and CLA?C?NN. Three of these are of two words and there are three accents.

Could the answers be literally green land? Eire (emerald isle); fields; Innisfail (situated on the Great Green Way, & - apparently - known as the green heart of the Tropical North);

Do you want to take it from there, or would you like me to give it further thought.?

Thankyou kettledrum the link is obvious when you know how ; I was trying to be too devious !

Ancient and poetical Irish names for Ireland also include Gotla, Gort Gaedheal, Clar Conn and Four green fields.

Thanks again

Thanks for filling me in; glad to be able to help.
