6d Marble passage (5) ?L?E?

I am sure this must be ALLEY but fail to see the marble connection. I should be grateful for an explanation. Many thanks.

An Alley is a marble

Thank you. I really should use the dictionary more rather than google!

When I were a lad ... we used to play a game called "marbles", some of which were called "glass alleys".

For Christmas, we used to get an apple and an orange - and I'm not talking about a PC and a Mobile Phone!

I used to get an apple and orange in my Christmas stocking as well all those years ago, and the boys played marbles too. But I obviously didn't pay too much attention to what the marbles were called!
An Alley is a high quality marble, usually white or, more recently flecked with white, possibly derived from alabaster (Potteries terminology).
