The answer I found was to do with quotes attributed to them about 'arms'. As I said earlier it might not be the best connection! Good luck, if you find anything better let me know.

It could be that all three refused or returned awards.


Muhammad Ali supposedly threw away his medal from the 1964 Olympics as a protest over his punishment for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War; John Lennon returned his MBE in protest over Britain's involvement in the Biafra war in Nigeria as well as Vietnam; Boris Pasternak won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Literature but after initially accepting it he changed his mind under pressure from the USSR government.

Whoops, Ali fought at the 1960 Olympics, not 1964.
