For me it was A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman. I dragged myself through the first half and then admitted defeat. Were the author's following books any better?

I love Frederik Backman, although, his writing is quite stylised and has its' own particular rhythm.

I can't think of any bestsellers which defeated me although I must remember why so many books (by authors I have never heard of) are available at 99p. My Abandoned collection on my Kindle is quite large..... 🙄

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, which could have been retitled Tedious self-indulgent tripe.

Angela's Ashes, it read as if it had been written by a 10 year old, I never got all the hype about it.

Off the top of my head - "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger.

I simply couldn't get into it.  I might try again one day.

The Book Thief

This was our last book club read, and the review is this evening, ( will let you know the comments!). For myself I managed all of it but thought the ending was rushed and could have done with more padding out. I found it far fetched that the neighbour, who  was eight months pregnant, started to learn to drive.

Oh yes, time travellers wife, that's another that's still sitting in my kindle not even half read.

I enjoyed Angela's Ashes & Time Traveller (well at least I got to the end|!) but I don't look at best seller lists at all and certainly wouldn't take them as a recommendation.

Actually, drmorgans, that has reminded me, The Celestine Prophecy was the largest heap of lama-dung it had been misfortune to read up to 1993!

50 Shades of Grey.  Even the sex scenes were badly written.

Should I give Mr Backman another go...considering it was his first book that I gave up on? I just didn't care for the title character.

I despair every morning when I open the Daily Deals...and the monthly ones. Who are these authors?  Oh, and the endless cheesy romance novels...🤔😝

I think I read the first few paragraphs of 50 Shades when someone posted it on here. No...no...and No.

My book reading group at Waterstones read Our Hideous Progeny by C E McGill last month.

‘Our Hideous Progeny’ by C.E. McGill is a historical, gothic horror. 1850, London, Mary is the great niece of Victor Frankenstein and she’s determined to become an eminent scientist.

The group gave a unanimous thumbs down, so far fetched and drawn out.

but "The Book Thief" made a decent film IMV.

The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.  Dreadful.  I liked The Time Traveller's Wife and Angela's Ashes, and The Book Thief is one if my all time favourites.  The Celestine Prophecy was highly forgettable.

When my boy was a nipper he enjoyed he reading to him before he went to sleep.

We got the first Harry Potter book and I read him the first chapter. We both agreed to give up on it, as we weren't enjoying it.

The supposed chick porn - Shades of Grey

The Time Travellers Wife - yawn

We Need to Talk About Kevin - What a pile of rubbish

How did I forget about "Kevin"..Absolutely mind numbing.

I loved The Book Thief too, I found it very moving

I confess, I found 50 Shades somewhat, err, interesting 😉

Any Harry Potter book.

Milkman by Anna Burns, it won the Man Booker prize in 2018
