Weeded, hoed - I don't see how Weeded,hoe would work. For the latter, the clue would probably just have been Tool in Idaho edifice, again hidden in the clue.

NACW got the 4-letter version first, but thanks also to all the other contributors.

There are quite a few 4-letter possibilities (though I can’t see any for just 3 letters.) My guess would be the one that has 12 in third position (i.e. E=12).

The Ultra Alphapuzzel is a cinch today, the one on page 3 by the way, with the given E=4 the only alternatives for the first across are EMPEROR or EPHESUS. The latter being unlikely in the Express. Q=6.
