Nobody can afford to make decent telly these days.

For example, ITV's income took a massive hit when loads of new Freeview and Sky channels started taking away their advertising revenue. They, and their rivals, lost even more advertising revenue when companies realised that it's a hell of a lot cheaper to advertise online than it is on the box.

Meanwhile, the BBC has had its revenue cut in real terms by the Government, which first of all ceased paying for BBC World Service (thus creating an additional burden for licence payers) and then froze the licence fee. Major costume dramas, for example, cost about a million pounds an hour to make, so Aunty Beeb isn't going to making a vast number of those in future.

If you're looking for programme recommendations though, it would help people here to know
(a) what type of programmes you enjoy ; and
(b) which platforms you've got access to. (For example, it won't help you if someone recommends a series on Sky if you've only got Freeview).

However, if you've got BBC iPlayer, I suggest looking beyond the usual channels. In particular, I've grown extremely fond of BBC Alba for its quality programming. (Don't let the predominance of Gaelic put you off! Everything is subtitled in English).

For example, there's traditional music

That’s a fabulous answer buenchico. I have Freeview. I can understand what you are saying about costs. I watch bits of rubbishy progs sometimes, but I like a good film or detective crime programme. I like some quiz programmes and I like news programmes too.
i have resorted to BBC i player and ITV Hub plus ALL Four hub, where i watched the whole of The West Wing in a matter of weeks. Terrestrial tv is not good. too many futile game shows, and reality shows which i don't care for.
>>> too many futile game shows

I agree, although The Remotely Amusing Gameshow (on BBC Scotland) might be worth a look for its pure silliness :-)

There are some good movies hiding away on BBC iPlayer:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/films/featured
On iPlayer. I can recommend

The Split
Hinterland
Hidden
Silent Witness (25 seasons available)
The Pact
Luther
Dublin Murders
i don't fancy most of those, thought did binge three seasons of The Split also Dublin Murders, which were pretty good.
Whitechapel is being repeated very soon, I'm looking forward to seeing it again
Gentlemen Jack is excellent if you missed it

I "box setted" the first two series of Happy Valley which I'd never seen before. Sarah Lancashire is brilliant as the tough, angry police sergeant. New series due soon.
i have watched all of it Barry, excellent
For pure nostalgia and late night relaxation I watch Bangers and Cash. I am surprised at how much I enjoy it as I'm not a real car buff but the whole thing is lovely
Buenchico, you forgot to mention that the government passed the financial burden of free tv licences for the over 75s to the Beeb despite the Tory's promises to preserve it. 18% of the BBC budget gone, which is why the BBC had to scrap it except for those on pension credit.
I wonder how itv would fare if the BBC started showing adverts on their main channels. I believe the other channels want the BBC to remain licence funded
There are at least 300 channels provided by my cable supplier – when surfing through them, there is invariably nothing worth watching.
personally i would scrap the licence fee, let them show ads, every other channel does.
emmie, there is not enough tv advertising revenue to go round.
Anyone with Netflix? I can recommend 'Wrong Side of the Tracks' we are watching it now with Spanish dialogue (though it is also dubbed) which sounds more real, with English subtitles.
Interesting plot, multi-generational, well acted, sorry to be now nearing the end.
Buenchico says that no one can afford to make decent telly these days....with major costume dramas costing about a million pounds an hour to make.

The BBC burns through around 10 million pounds of tax payer money/day; to my mind they should be able to put aside a couple of days worth of spending to make some decent telly.
just up from my beddy pit and reading your posts but never mind the actual programmes - isn't there a load of money thrown at these stupid adverts, costumes, materials, making of them, showing them and sometimes non-understanding of them. What's that about?

I know they cost a bloody fortune.
We've had some fantastic dramas from the BBC recently - they can't all appeal to everyone but I have enjoyed many.
Very thin on the ground for me too at the moment. I like the real A&E, helimed type programmes best. The ones that are on are repeats. Watching Sewing Bee, Yorkshire Vet, Pointless and a few others. On the plus side, I'm listening to more music and reading more so it's not all bad.
