1. In bachelor style (2,6) E - G - R - O -


(Could it be en garcon?)


2. Heavy jawed hound (6) - - W - E -


(It might be basset but the W looks right)


3. South American marmoset (7) - - C - H - S


4. Liquid used for purification (6) E - U - N -

hi the marmoset is jacchus and the liquid used in purifcation is eluant(can also be spelled eluent) good luck with your other clues

Thanks all of you for the answers and for being involved.


I live in NZ and access the Telegraph via its webpage version, which does not show the solution until a week later -- at least that is what it did when the puzzle was competitive. I could never enter the competition which was restricted to those living in UK.


I read what news items interest me and I copy off daily the cryptic, the quick and the sudoku. They tend to accumulate.
