It's a bit tenuous I must admit, but a ferry is either in or out of port at regular intervals.
I quite like IN(ve)RARITY but can't justify the 've' bit.
Could it be Hebrides - Inner or Outer?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have now discounted Stirling as I have used that name already and am pretty sure it is correct. I now think the closest answer so far could be Hebrides.
TOWARD is a village near Dunoon ('toward' = 'approaching,' so not yet 'in'?)
My first thought was Loch Ness (monster) but it doesn't really work does it
