I just looked out at the snow and watched a Robin attacking a fat ball on one of our bird feeders, and for some reason suet dumplings sprang to mind. Coming home from school on such a day to my mum's lovely piping hot lamb stew with pearl barley, vegetables, and suet dumplings. A real cockle-warmer!!

Does anyone make them any more?

I don't make them because of the suet. If I could use a non-suet recipe, I would gladly make them.
i never liked them, not even when my mother made them, i can't abide anything that is fatty, greasy, not even fish and chips now.
No :-(

I love dumplings, and have tried a few times to make 'em but without success.
Always make suet dumplings with a stew or casserole 'cos I'm a Norfolk dumpling :)
I do naomi...often. I make mine with lots of dried herbs and have them with stews and beef in red wine...

Funnily enough I've just emptied a large box of Arota Suet on the Bird table
ohh, yes.....if i provided stew without dumplings in my house, i'd be lynched! i like vegetable suet in mine x
My wife makes them, and she puts them in the oven to give them a sort of crispy topping.
Yes naomi - they are naughty but nice :)) Did you know you can cook them in the microwave? Think its about 4 mins max - not too long or they go tough and hard.
That's how I cook mine bookbinder
...great minds, and all that, mazie!
or the other one bookbinder !
Found this on a forum site - You can cook them in less 3 mins in a microwave if you are in a hurry and just put them in the casserole for last 5 mins to soak up the juice

If you put cling film over the top when microwaving them - they steam as well as cook from the inside and so stay moist. you might have to vary the time based on the wattage of your microwave - 3 mins is for 850w..
Mum makes them every time she makes a stew. I love them. They are fluffy and crispy on the top. I have never found them to be greasy though. Deeeeelish! :)
lol at BB and mazie!!

I love suet dumplings with stew.
Wendi has some in her slow cooker for dinner tonight, forgot to ask her what time I should arrive :-D

No-one else in this house likes them, suits me just fine..
Might have to try that Ann.
I love suet dumplings in a rich meaty (beef) stew, we had one a few weeks ago in fact :)
My OM wont touch them alba....so loads for me :o)
I make dumpling a lot, I love them. I'm having soup tonight and you've put me in mind of them so I'll just have to make some now.
Nope....they are on my 'won't eat' list.
Tilly: you can get vegetarian suet from Sainsbury's and Morrisons. Suet has no more calorific fat than butter or marg and the vegetarian suet is made from vegetable fat. 150grms self raising flour - 75grms suet - teaspoon salt pepper to taste - dried herbs or cheese or diced onion can be added then add enough water to make soft dough ans spoon into bubbling soup or stew.
