29)The "Maid of Orleans" (3,2,7) ..................I always understood this clue to refer to Joan of Arc, but it doesn't fit the number of letters. Any other suggestions please?

Jai La Pucelle
Question Author
thank you jjo 1958-most clever!
I am a bit puzzled as to why the answer is Jai (or J'ai) La Pucelle for this clue?
I understand the 'La Pucelle' which is French for 'The Maid' and how Joan of Arc liked to be known according to a saying that is attributed to her: 'I have the name of The Maid'.
But surely 'J'ai la pucelle' translated from French would mean 'I have the maid'?
I note her preferred French name was Jehanne or Jeanne - perhaps the 3 letter word might be 'Jen' or even 'Jan' (the latter word being how Jehanne is pronounced)?
She was also sometimes known as Jehanne la Pucellle or Jeanne La Pucelle. Perhaps the setter has made an error in the number of letters for the first word?
What do others think?
still puzzled tonite, please can anyone help me with this one? (see message above)
