The word before pomonella begins with C and the word is much shorter than I need.

Thanks now to Aquagility and teacher 1. I had just found Laspeyresia which has made my answer to 32d wrong. I had Sophistic!!

Sorry to be a bit dim, aquagility, but what do you mean by casu. Have tried it as the first 4 letters of 32d but One Look Dictionary didn't like it.
