How long would a train journey of 100 miles take in the UK?

Dublin to Belfast, about 112 miles, takes two hours. That seems slow to me.

It depends which route, some are high speed lines and many are not. It used to take me at least two hours to travel the 60 miles from Dover to London - the new line means it takes 1 hr 5 mins.

typically trains from dublin to belfast are allowed 2h15mn, which is an average speed of 49mph approx. that makes it one of the slowest inter-city train journeys in western europe, and is only 15mn quicker than the equivalent bus journey. millions would be needed to upgrade the infrastructure to allow higher speeds, so there's not going to be any change in the near future.

Try heading south instead. Dublin to Wexford = 82 miles, takes 2½ hours. Mind you, it's stunning and well worth it, so long as you're not in a hurry. Some of the cliff tracks were designed by Brunel
