Hi
I've got and filled in the five thematic answers, I've got the saying and source, I've answered all the other clus, but.......................
what is meant by 'clashes between ten crossing answers must be resolved to display the origins, to be symbolised by the most appropriately-shaped letter of the four which do not otherwise appear in the grid' ????
I think I've even got those four letters!
But I'm stumped, and help would be appreciated!
P.S. It's freezing cold here!

If you see the cell in which the clues clash you should find that the clashing letters in all cases, when anagrammed, make the first of the words missing from the saying. The letter to replace that word is the first letter of the Latin word for the second word missing from the saying. (That's what I thought, anyway)

Thanks Turnerjmw
I'll have another go!
No problem. Shout if you need anything else
Hi both - it may be my jet-lagged state, but I can't quite see my way through this.
I make the clashing letters an anagram of the second missing word, and have taken "the four which do not otherwise appear in the grid" as the first missing word, entering this word's first letter as semi-pictorial representation (most appropriately shaped) of the second word which presumably then should be written under the
grid(?)
Slaney:
You need to check the whole grid and note that 4 of 26 different letters do not appear. One of these is missingword2-shaped and symbolises it in 5 cells.
Below the grid,in my reading of the preamble, I favour missing word 2.
Turnerjmw prefers missing word 1's genus starting with the same letter as our symbol, but I cannot justify this from the preamble???
Ah - thank you very much MLN - I now see what turnerjmw was hinting at in the first post.
Happy to help. ;-)
So what do you think goes below the grid, option 1 or 2?
I was going to stick with my original thought of the second missing word as it ties in with both the title of the crossword and is what the "appropriately shaped letter" is meant to symbolise.
MLN - the thought from turnerjmw being from the latin is the same letter that looks a bit like it, and so I went for that letter because of the latter. Not sure which of the others resembles it?
I agree. The genus just doesn't tie in with the title nor the preamble! I'll also stick with my original thought.
so are you saying that we are all talking about the same letter of the 4?

Nothing seems concrete
Midazolam:
It must be 'that' letter.
The problem seems to be what is written below the grid. Although I see turnerjmw's line of thinking, I just cannot tie this option to the preamble. In my opinnion, this letter is shaped like and so symbolises what is under the grid.
My apologies for creating confusion or a wild goose chase with my earlier post. I typed it on my phone without reference to the puzzle, and I see now my memory of the saying was faulty, as in my own mind I inverted it. So I had the first and second missing words in the saying the wrong way round. On revisiting it, of course the anagrams are of the second missing word, and I agree that my original idea for what should be written underneath, while fanciful, was "barking up the wrong tree" and that it should be the missing second word (singular).
oh i see, sorry misunderstood as well. The longer of the 2 words must be written beneath the grid (as in the one that is removed to give the symbolic letter).
Glad we concur. :-)
After finding this thread, I was thinking I'd missed something more complicated within the preamble!
Hi Everyone,
I've only just picked up this crossword and it seems to be going swimmingly apart from the fact that some of my answers fit their clues but are too long for the space. This seem at odds with the preamble. I'm sure I'm missing something but I'd really like to finish this before tomorrow's one arrives! Any tips?
Ten answers are longer than their grid space allows which means that they overlap in five spaces. You may find that there are similar letters involved. Follow the little hints given above and you should arrive at some great answers !
Thanks ulysses 100,
It all makes sense now!
