No. W as the first letter is impossible as it turns out.
chelle 7272 was trying to help, but was unaware of the special instructions that come with the Guardian Genius crosswords

Absolutely. The help was appreciated. I'm almost 100% sure it's REEDS, since the R as first letter is a major candidate. I just can't see "gardens" is the problem.
I don't know if it helps, but Chambers gives
reed = ree = yard and in the definition for garden it has 'cf yard'.
