Could it be a North American Indian sending a Valentine card?
I would say that the men in uniform and the plane dropping the bomb , combined with the significance of Valentine's day and smoke signals confirm that it's SOMETHING to do with friendly fire, but I've yet to fully understand these cartoons.

This is not a particularly bad one. Most days I scratch my head at their significance and I have not once found them funny !

I think they're a waste of space, and I'd personally rather see another sudoku, or a few more quiz questions !

Clearly, I haven't had sight of the cartoon in question and the additional detail given by eddiebunadds a much more macabre dimension to the "joke". My "explanation" no longer seems relevant.
I think you're right Nita as regards friendly fire but to me this cartoonist has only once made me laugh - when he commented on the recent looters on the beach: "JETSAM, FLOTSAM, GET SOME, GOT SOME".
