Having watched the news item last night re companies not allowing Christmas decorations to be put up in the workplace I was absolutely outraged!

What the h*ll is going on?

Did these so called bosses bother to ask their workforce, Christian or otherwise, if their sensibilities would be offended by a few baubles and the odd bit of tinsel? Probably not.

I am not a practising Christian myself however so long as you are not thrusting your religious beliefs down my throat in the hope of getting a conversion out of me I couldn't care less what you do to praise your own personal diety, be it everyday or at specific religious times and festivals.

In these times of the government pushing multi culturalism, integration and tolerance can they not see that by taking festivals like Christmas and Easter away from those who believe in it they are themselves fostering resentment, segregation and intolerance?

Is it therefore any wonder we have racial unrest and parties such as the BNP gaining strength? Whatever happened to live and let live? Or does that not apply to Christians?

Sorry if this has turned into a bit of a party political broadcast by the "Leave Christmas the H*ll Alone Party" but my NON Christian sensibilities are heartily offended by NOT being able to see what is sometimes a very drab and miserable world lit up with lights, trees and giant inflatable Santas. =0) twaflooers

here here, i totally agree, it seems that we have to give in to everyone, ie did you hear that channel 4's alternative christmas speach is going to be made my a lady in full vail, what is the world no sorry what is the UK coming to.
I am totally in agreement with you. So where is the harm in putting up a few decorations and spreading a bit of christmas cheer.

I have nothing against other peoples beliefs but I think that politically correctness has gone too far.
I think its very sad! Look at the poor woman who worked fo BA and wore a cross on her necklace. And in the summer when we were all supporting our national football team with our St George cross flags - that was also frowned upon.
Its about time our government started to take pride in our own cultures and beliefs but sadly it seems that we, in our own country, are the ones to be discriminated against.
that's why they call it an alternative speech, Julie. If they just broadcast the queen, it wouldn't be alternative. I expect the UK will survive the shock and you will too.
Past "Alternative Speeches" have been: Ali G, Sharon Osbourne, Brigitte Bardot, Rory Bremner (dressed as Diana), Quentin Crisp and even the Simpsons.

Aren't they getting a bit more political this year than in previous years?
I always thought the "alternative" bit was that it wasn't political.
Don't get me started on this one. Why shouldn't we be able to celibrate Christmas as it should be. With cribs and carols and angels. The trees and santas too and the lights the the baby Jeus the whole cotten caboodle. I know that other religions are not affended by it, we have friends that are Hindus and some that are muslims. In fact my daughter-in-law is muslim and she gets upset when faced with this sort of thing. She comes to midnight mass with us and joins in all the celebrations with us. We do the same with her and her celebrations. Her parents feel the same, I think untold damage is being done to race relation by this.

Alright rant over for now. :-)
I answered another very similar question a little further down the list... That question was a bit different, but the answer is essentially the same:

Blame the "compensation culture". The councils are sh***ing themselves senseless that some oik will sue them if they fall off a chair or a desk trying to put decorations up. It's not the jobsworths who have taken over, it's an unholy alliance of the insurance companies and the lawyers.

You may think it's "multiculturalism" which is driving this madness: it's not; it's purely and simply money. They don't want to risk being sued, and then find their insurance won't cover it.
Personally I think that Christmas decorations in the workplace are pointless and inappropriate but it's got nothing to do with offending religious minorities.
I agree wholeheartedly twaflooers!!! In the world we live in today, "politically correct" is being carried so far it is becoming "politically incorrect"!!!
what i have always wondered when companies and local governments stop us putting christmas decorations and national flags up and stuff like this is - has there ever been an actual complaint against it, has anyone ever heard of a person being offended by it? when i lived in Bradford all my asian friends enjoyed christmas and everything that goes with it as much as anyone - im sure if i lived in India i'd enjoy dewali!
The country is becoming multicultural, nothing is going to change that. None Christmas celebrating religions are able to celebrate their festivals and beliefs without hinderance.
These are in celebration of their religions' heritage and they have every right to follow that. There is an argument that it gives us the right to celebrate our beliefs and religions too.
Therein lies the problem. Take every single person who celebrates christmas and ask them what it means to them. Chances are its got b*gger all to do with the birth of Christ.
However, what we choose to get out of Christmas or how it is celebrated should be left alone.
Modern society is so terrified of offending minorities that they have diluted and repackaged Christmas without actually bothering to ask if it offends anyone in the first place?
The news is constantly showing stories where councils have banned decorations because they may offend a certain religion. No interviews with those actually being 'offended'. Why? probably because they couldnt care less and are happy to live amongst our festivals and beliefs as they are the festivals and beliefs of the majority religion in which they are living.
The same happens with ex pats abroad who are living amongst their host country's festivals and celebrations. There are very few stories from other countries where things like Passover or Diwali have been cancelled in case it offends the Christians living down the road.

My sentiments exactly sarnieken.
I have relations who have for a long time worked over seas in the Middle East and from what I understand the Christians who are where they are do continue to worship God / Christ however they have to do it in secret. There are certainly no provisions made for them re their religion and they have to pretend they are going to play 'bridge' in order to avoid awkward questions about why a large group of them are meeting up.

I very much doubt that any of them would ever dare to ask the host country to stop it's particular religious practices in order not to be offended by their non Christian worship.

It just goes to show that other countries remain true to their religion and to their people - it's a shame Britain doesn't do the same!
