Whereas in India:

Published reports suggest that between 81,000 and 138,000 deaths occur each year. Snakebite envenoming causes as many as 400,000 amputations and other permanent disabilities.

The UK is just about to get rid of its biggest snake, only a few more weeks to go.
It's news in a country where the biggest threat traditionally has been restricted to the common adder

I love snakes - but I'd struggle to eat an anaconda!
We are lucky to not have many here but caution is still needed when out and about.
You answer your own query. In some places something is common and an accepted risk. Elsewhere it's unexpected and therefore newsworthy.
