i've posted this in chatbank because i'm not looking for an answer . . .
two minor updates from microsoft this morning that took four hours and made my laptop work at snail pace. Having completed and restarted, lastpass didn't work so i deleted it and reinstalled it, how do people less computer savvy deal with microsoft updates?

They are a royal pain in the ass. Turn them off if you can.
I'm using a laptop with Ubuntu and Windows 10 on. I used to use Ubuntu almost exclusively but ended up with a backlog of Windows updates. Trying to install them, it sat there with the same percentage and "Don't turn off your computer" for 6 hours so I switched it off.

I managed to sort it out and now use Windows regularly so I don't get a backlog. If you turn off updates and then decide you need them sometime in the future, you may have problems.
That's exactly why I moved entirely to Apple - Mac never does an update without asking and then takes a sensible time to install.

I recently used my elderly (2013) Macbook for the first time in about a year - it booted up in 15 seconds and ran entirely happily - when I'd finished what I needed it for, I ran the suggested updates - took about 10 minutes and all the installed software still worked after the update.

I do still have a Windows laptop in a bag somewhere - I dread the day when I need to run it for some reason :-(
