This was a very early example of simple cultural differences.
Here in the UK, the notion of a man marrying his second cousin at any age, much less as a child, would be considered utterly beyond belief.
However, in the southern states where Jerry Lee and his family lived, it was considered so usual as to not invite comment, so the couple were genuinely amazed to find the level of hostility they encountered.
As I said, it was an early example of cultural differences, to which we are exposed far more frequently now with the advent of world travel, electronic media, and the internet.
