Beech Mast

I gather one of the reasons that we've got many hawfinches in the country, is due to the failure of the beech mast crop on the continent.
I had a walk round my local park this morning and found exactly the same.
What's the beech mast crop like in your neck of the woods?

Interesting point Melv.
I was under the impression that their main diet was hawthorn berries and hornbeam nutlets.
I agree that beech mast can be very unpredictable though.

Another bonus regarding the beech mast failure is the numbers of parrot crossbills in my area at the moment.
