Clue reads: Dear departed driver, with poles becomes almost adult (4,5)

?a?e ?e?n?

The answer appears to be : late teens

What I cannot workout is what "tee" has got to do with "driver". I know that the golf ball is placed on a tee but is there also a driver called a "tee".

Thanks for your help as I am out of my depth on this one.

tee is in my book under driver
Maybe it's T not TEE (There is a T-driver). The Poles would then be E E N S
late(departed) + tee(driver) + n(orth) & s(outh) poles
Mally seems to have found a tee=driver so ignore mine
You put your golf ball on a tee and whack it with a driver.
^ Not always first time in my case, lozzy
Late - departed
tee - from which you drive your golf ball
N & S - poles
Whole thing - almost adult
I'm well known for air swings, divots and bending clubs ;-)

No medals then Ozzy
Nope, but hole number nineteen is where I manage to sink a few ;-)
Getting some rounds in then.
I'm the first to shout and the last to leave, with an empty wallet and a dismal score card, wearing a big smile.
Now i'm stymied for a reply to that.
