Something old? (close of tO pitifuL wilD) ?
long ago
Could you please explain to me, Wharton?
pixie373 - It'a wild stab in the dark. Anagram of Lago (who made a film of The Prince and the Pauper + (di)ngo (wild dog heading off). If the poster hadn't mentioned the P or L, I wouldn't have responded. I'm not going to attempt answering any more tonight and I'm putting more water in my next glass of whisky :-)
It's a good answer, Wharton. Thanks for explaining x
It's probably wrong pixie373 but you're very kind :-)

Thanks for your help but I'm not sure that's going to fit as I'm pretty sure now the l at the end is right. My best guess would be an ancient word for a pauper being something like a lack-all but haven't found any reference to it. Never mind, thanks for trying!
lack-all (archaic) someone who is destitute - Chambers - well done yourself :-)
Yes! Jackal! Well done

Phew! Thought I was never going to get there - thanks for the support!

Of course! I see it now, L from the end of pitiful plus jackal without the J - very clever.
Yes, j off jackal plus extra l (tail). Well done for working it out :-)
