Right in the middle of a game my PS3 went weird and even after shutting down and leaving overnight it now won't recognise any disc although all the other stuff is there. Any ideas on diagnosis, prognosis? I'm gutted.

One possibility is it could be the Drive Lense needs cleaning or replacing. If you do a search on Youtube there are quite a few videos showing how to go about the process.

Thanks triggs I'm so effed off. I'm at a critical point, sure you understand.
I cut and paste this from another forum.

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

There are also quite a few youtube clips claiming to be able to fix the problem you could search for and try.

Apparently a lot of the 60GB models had problems.

Good luck!

Thanks RB tried that, used the return to default and still nothing. I guess the disc reader is US. So next question, there's no council tax this month so a new one will be ordered (it's an essential). Is there a way to take all the saved game data (which is still there) and transfer to a new one?
Have you tried option 3? • Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.

No we cross-posted, I'll give that a go
I'm not too clued up about consoles these days. The last one I had was a PS2 after which I turned into a PC gaming geek.

Like Trigg said as a fellow gamer I feel your pain. Loved the chest beating quip Trigg ;p

Life without gaming is like a chocolate hobnob without the chocolate!

Aunty google did find this though..... http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/general/detail/linked347570/item357244/Back-up-data/

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help. I got quite excited about option 3 but sadly no joy. I'll follow the instructions about backing up our stuff and get the newer slimline PS3. I'd just beaten the final boss last night and had started on the bonus levels Grrr. (I'm a platformer so not worthy of 'gamer' in company of the fanatics ;-)

Got nothing against platformers either. I really enjoyed the Crash Bandicoot games on the PS2.

Shame option 3 didn't work! Hopefully the Slimline will treat you better and you manage to back up our saves.

Thanks for the warm welcome Trigg. Only been here a few days but this does look like a great little community.

See platformers really require far more dextrous skill than shoot em ups and fantasy IMO. I've worked my way through (some over and over) Sonic, Spyro,Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank (brilliant), Donkey Kong and Supermario (on the Wii) and was playing Rayman Origins when the PS3 broke. It had been lying as a still sealed gift that I didn't fancy for months but actually it's rather good and bloody difficult in places.
Manic Miner is still the epitome of pixel perfect platforming. I played a few levels on the C64 emulator only last weekend....
PS4 is now strongly rumoured to be announced on Feb 20th so if that is the case PS3 prices should tumble shortly after.
Wow Manic Miner now there's a blast from the past. I remember playing that on my trusty ZX Spectrum. I used to love Jet Set Willy and the Dizzy Egg games too.

Many hours of wasted life spent on these!
What's wrong with playing freecell over and over and over and ........... ?
