Lilacs scattered on a sea monster. ?C?L?A Assuming it's an anagram of lilacs, I get scilla but all my checks show Scylla as the monster.

Is this a compiler's mistake or are there two spellings? Thanks.

Better late than never: according to Oxford & Chambers, that spelling is reserved for the flower (a type of lily) -- so I imagine it's your local paper's mistake!
