does anyone know where the saying "neck of the woods "comes from ?

I think I heard this answer on a TV programme or something.  I think it goes back a long, long way when most of England was forest, and people didn't travel far so didn't really know place names for areas, I guess.  It is just a phrase to identify where somebody comes from.  i.e. "is that your neck of the woods?".  That's what I remember anyway.
