Why do we refer to a shopping trip as a spending spree?

A spree is 'a period or occasion of extravagant or riotous indulgence...a revel, a binge', according to the Shorter Oxford,and it first appeared in the late 18th cenetury. No authorities seem to know where the word came from, however. So, a spending spree is an indulgent shopping trip.
