Basically, it is a reference to the fact that - at Christmas - most people have to spend part of the holiday with their in-laws (ie husband's/wife's family) and they would really rather not have to do that! Going on this holiday package is a good way of getting out of it, in other words, as 'ditch' means 'give up' or 'abandon'.
