I thought that cackleberry was a dialect word in Southern England, meaning egg. Am I right??

It is slang for an egg but it originated in the USA not southern England.

I've never heard of it even though I've lived in the South East and South West.

I've heard it used in Ireland, but would agree with Quizmonster that it originated in USA

Slight variation is cacklefruit, which I recall from Somerser/Devon back in the 50s. Not sure of the origin.
