Hi, I'm looking for a word that means because something has gone on for many years, it is now accepted practice. It is an old fashioned word (I think) and I can't for the life of me remember.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply, but, the word still remains a mystery. Implied is sort of there, the name I'm thinking of is more antiquated, though.

I've asked a Tu focal and a manger who've been here for years and they both said custom and practice was the formal name. Honorarium was also suggested but that's more payment/perks for non-contracted duties.

what you mean in legal terms is - through use and toleration has become an implied term of the contract

and there is quite a lot of case law attached to quite a lot of the contributions here

I like: Judgie-baby - I dont care how long you have done this from custom - if I think a practice is negligent I will find it so

compared with:
SAS court martial - the three NCOs acquitted on a Galbraith plea ( no case to answer) because the death run had been organised like that for so long that they couldnt possibly be called negligent

each case is decided on its own facts ..... you dont need a victorian phrase, just say what has occurred
