Scottish Government to help refugee families:
A new £100,000 scheme has been launched by the Scottish Government to support people with living costs and essential items upon their arrival, removing the delay caused by UK benefit assessment rules.
Equalities Secretary Angela Constance said: “Too many people arriving in Scotland under family reunion arrangements are forced to start their new life in abject poverty because they cannot apply for support until they arrive here.
“When you consider that these people have been separated from their families, have fled their home – often under threats of violence and death – that is not acceptable.
“Scotland is a welcoming country and we want everyone who chooses it as their new home to be able to do so with a sense of safety, security and hope for their future here".

I was unaware of the subject issue of this post but good on the Scottish Government. However, reading all the above I am fascinated how one can "pigeon hole" almost everyone posting as to which part of the UK they come from based on the true-

And I never thought. This scheme may help Ms Sturgeon take in a refugee. I seem to recall she and Yvette Cooper-Balls promising to do so during the "crisis" a couple of year's ago. I don't think her promise has been fulfilled yet. Mrs Balls has an excuse as she had to help her husband train to go dancing on the telly but I don't think Ms Sturgeon has any excuses.

Just so that no one falls for the myth that Scotland is more "welcoming" than the rest of Britain.

I don't know how far £100,000 as a " Family Reunion Crisis Grant" will go. Is that for one re-unified family per year, or what?
Nice to see the Scots doing something positive about the traditional "canny Scot" (i.e. "mean bustard") stereotype. However, the proposed legislation will compel the rest of us to dig deeper into our pockets too. This from the link (stress - if it works - by me):
"Earlier this year, a bill introduced by SNP MP Angus MacNeil passed its second reading in the House of Commons, which would expand the definition of family members permitted to come to the UK under reunion rules and to reintroduce legal aid for refugees in England and Wales[i. The UK is one of very few countries which [i]only] allows spouses or children under 18 to join refugees."
Does anyone know the expanded meaning of "family" which is being proposed? In the States, which has a very generous definition for the purposes of re-unification, not just dozens, but hundreds of people can end up in America on the basis of a single "family" connection.
