Means to die, literally or figuratively...Origin is from The Bible, Acts 12. 'And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.'  In this context, ghost is equivalent to the spirit, sometime misinterpreted as soul...

AGREE its a text in several bible passages, but can also be used in the sense that your've tried to sort something out with no effect and that nothing can be done to resolve the situation so you may say

I've given up the ghost meaning its dead and gone but still haunts you and shouldn't have ended in such a way and you have been deafeated
