Why do we say 'None Was' instead of None were?

Because the word 'none' is singular; it must, therefore, take a singular verb, in the same way as I, he, she, it and all other singular forms do.
With all respect to Quizmonster, it's hard to regard "none" as singular. It's probably easiest to think of it as short for "not one", when it becomes clear that it should take "was" rather than "were".
