I believe it comes from the Bible when at the feast of Belshazzar a moving hand was seen to write on the wall. The writing foretold of the downfall of his kingdom.

The writing was:
MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

Daniel 5 verses 1 to 8 describes the hand writing on the wall.

Daniel 5 verses 23 to 30 describes the words themselves and Daniel's interpretation.
